One of my favorite places to visit is Grand Teton National Park.  I remember the first time I saw the park and the mountains.  It was 1983, and I was driving from Oregon to Washington, D.C., to begin my studies in Canon Law at The Catholic University of America.  In the days before GPS, one depended on AAA to draw up a "Trip Tik," that is, a page by page map to the destination.  AAA asked me what route I wanted to take, and I said there were only two things I really wanted to see cross-country: Yellowstone National Park, and its close neighbor, Grand Teton National Park, both in Wyoming.

So, a few miles short of the parks in Wyoming, ascending a small ridge, I entered the Jackson Hole Valley.  What I saw (left) nearly drove me off the road.  Before me, on a clear day, was the most beautiful and impressive range of mountains I had ever seen: Grand Teton National Park.

In a religious sense, I could have been Peter, James, and John on the mount of the Transfiguration of Jesus.  The scene was dazzlingly light, radiant, luminous, and transcendent.  We sometimes use the word liminal to explain a moment that takes us to the edge of human experience, to the limit of what we can fully experience and process.  I was at that point.  And now, these many years later, I continue to experience those same feelings of satisfaction, gratitude, and joy.  ​
