I am a native Oregonian, born and raised in the Portland area, which is at the west end of the Columbia River Gorge. In 1986, the gorge was designated a National Scenic Area, now protected from development. The gorge itself, basalt rock created by ancient lava flows, later cut through by ancient floods and the Columbia River, rises 4000 ft above the river. Over the cliffs flow many waterfalls, including the 620 ft. Multnomah Falls. Trails lead to these waterfalls; and, now that I'm retired, I have time to hike the trails and see these falls.
