On my 65th birthday, June 6, my brother-in-law, Colby Howe, treated me to a jet-boat ride up the Deschutes River in Oregon. It was a beautiful day, and the river canyon was even more beautiful. We had lunch on the river with our guide, Jack Lafont. After the river, we headed to Heppner, to the Kilkenny Ranch and their lodge for guests and hunters. John and Diane Kilkenny were perfect hosts, and we enjoyed a delicious steak dinner on their patio—with bright stars overhead. The next day, John gave us a tour of their 8,000 acre ranch, with wildflowers in full bloom. An experience I won't soon forget—thanks to Colby!
