It is hard to beat the beauty of this land! The Wallowa Mountains and Wallowa Lake are just south of Enterprise and Joseph in northeast Oregon. The Wallowas are sometimes called “Oregon’s Alps” (one of the peaks in the range is called “The Matterhorn,” at 9,702 ft). Wallowa Lake is at the foot of the Wallowas about a mile south of Joseph. It was formed when ancient glaciers sliding out of the Wallowas scooped out a lake bed and piled the ruble into ridges called moraines. The lake is about 300 ft. deep. A number of rivers pass through northeast Oregon: the Wallowa, the Grande Ronde, the Lostine, and the Minam. All of them provide beautiful vistas and good fishing. This is a photographer’s paradise!
