As one would expect, there aren’t many towns—or towns of any size—in northeast Oregon. The commercial center would be Enterprise (pop. 1,990), the county seat of Wallowa County. Established in about 1887, the railroad didn’t arrive in Enterprise until 1908. After that, the population grew, and a courthouse was built in 1909. Joseph, named after old “Chief Joseph” of the Nez Perce tribe, was established in 1880; the 1890 census reported a population of 249. Today, Joseph is mostly known for its bronze foundries, a lively arts scene, and the Chief Joseph Days rodeo. I've added a few towns here beyond the Wallowas, including one of my favorites: Condon.
