Latourell Falls cascades over one of the best examples of columnar basalt in the region (this basalt is seen in the picture on the left). The basalt is the result of massive lava flows that formed the Cascade Mountains. Note also the beautiful green and yellow lichens that have formed on the basalt. Latourell Falls drops 224 ft., and it is the closest falls to Portland.
