Helper is a city in Carbon County, Utah, approximately 110 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. The population was 2,112 at the 2020 census. A highlight of the city is the Western Mining and Railroad Museum whose holdings give a sense of the town in late 19th and early 20th centuries. Main Street (pic at left) is nicely restored and hosts some commercial businesses. The town's name comes from the fact that trains traveling westward from the Price side to the Salt Lake City side of the mountains required additional "helper" engines of the Rio Grande Western Railroad stationed in the city. Today, Helper is a hub of the Union Pacific Railroad.
