The Roman Villa of Casale—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—was once the residence of a high Roman dignitary. Built between the 2C or 4C, its uniqueness comes from the extensive use of polychrome mosaics, mostly of the Roman-African school, that cover almost the entire floorspace. The variety and quality of the villa's marble, and the multi-colored tesserae (mosaic pieces), are unparalleled elsewhere. Excavation of the villa only took place in the last century, and it continues today. A remarkable site!
