Trinity College was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I to "civilize" Dublin. Trinity is Ireland's oldest and most famous university. The Old Library at Trinity contains the Book of Kells, a magnificent 9th century illustrated manuscript of the Gospels. Close by Trinity, on Merrion Square, are the famous "doors of Dublin" in the 18th century Georgian style.
