At the height of its glory, Siracusa rivaled Athens as the most powerful city in the Greek world. Siracusa was colonized in the mid-8C BC by Greeks from Corinth, and it became a Roman city in 212 BC. St. Paul visited Siracusa on his way to Rome (59 AD). The city is situated on a beautiful bay, and it has significant Greek ruins. It is also a baroque city, as one can see in the picture at left. Touring the city took more time than we had, and one day I hope to return—hopefully with the sun shining!
