San Giovanni Rotondo is a small town in the Gargano Peninsula on Italy's Adriatic coast. Until the last century, it was known only as a stop along the pilgrimage route to Monte Sant'Angelo. In recent decades, however, it has become famous as the home Padre Pio of Pietrelcina (1887-1968), now known as St. Padre Pio. The shrine attracts over 7 million pilgrims each year, second only to the shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
