Amboy, California, once a major stop along the famous Route 66, is home to Roy's Motel and Cafe. Though Amboy was first settled in 1858, its population today is only 4, all men. Roy's opened in 1938, and it became a mid-century icon in 1959 with its motel reception, "an inclined roof flying over a glassed wedge." Since 2008, there have been plans to restore and reopen the motel and cafe, but a lack of potable water at this Mojave Desert site has kept the historic Route 66 landmark closed.
