On the mountain slopes behind Palermo, Monreale is the site of the most important Norman building in Sicily: the cathedral built by William II (completed 1182). Palermo itself is Italy's fifth largest city, with magnificent monuments, lively streets, incredible food, and a mild climate. The architecture of Palermo reflects its colorful history: Norman palaces and churches with Arab influences, Spanish baroque, and 19th century splendor when Palermo was part of the Grand Tour. It is also a modern city with a busy port. Palermo has much to offer the tourist and pilgrim!
