Not far from San Giovanni Rotondo is the Sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo, the oldest shrine in western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The sanctuary was a popular pilgrimage site in the middle ages. It is reached through a medieval courtyard and portico. Stairs descend to a grotto-like chapel where apparitions of St. Michael took place. Pilgrims have come to Monte Sant'Angelo for over 1500 years. It continues to be a place of great mystery, reverence, and prayer.
