Matera is a city in Basilicata with roots that go back to Neolithic times. The main square of Matera overlooks the lower town with its ancient sassi--rock dwellings and caves that are cut directly into the stone. Among these caves are some 130 churches. The dwellings themselves have now become popular and are being restored. Because of its uniqueness, Matera and its sassi have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Mel Gibson film The Passion of the Christ was partially filmed here. A fascinating city!
