Iona is a small island in the Inner Hebrides of western Scotland, a mere 3 miles long and 1.5 wide. It's small size belies its importance. Iona is the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland, thanks to the missionary work of St. Columba, who came to the island in 563 and established a monastery. Though the original monastery is long gone, a 13th century monastery was restored with a new community in the 20th century (left). The population of the island is about 200. The spare and rugged beauty of this remote island, with its religious heritage, will inspire and reward you.
