One of the most important geological sites in the world, the Giant's Causeway on the Antrim Coast is a World Heritage Site. Formed by a great volcanic eruption around 60 million years ago, the lava solidified into layers of hard basalt. As the lava cooled, it formed polygonal columns (four, five, six, seven, eight, and nine sided). On the way to the causeway, we stopped at Dunluce Castle, perched dramatically on the cliffs above the sea. It was abandoned when the kitchen collapsed (1639) and fell into the sea.
