We visited a bare and rugged battlefield near Inverness, the site of the famous Battle of Culloden, April 16, 1746. Jacobite troops (Catholic supporters of James VII of Scotland) under Bonnie Prince Charlie were defeated by supporters of the Hanover dynasty (King George II). This was the end of the Jacobite resistance. In some ways, though smaller in scale, the battlefield reminded me of Gettysburg. There is an excellent museum adjacent to the battlefield which gives the historical context of the battle and a vivid picture of the battle itself. Well worth a visit.
