Bari is the capital of Puglia and the second largest city after Naples in southern Italy. The old town of Bari is a cluster of maze-like winding streets. For pilgrims, Bari is the home of St. Nicholas. In the eleventh century, the remains of St. Nicholas were brought to Bari from Turkey. The Basilica of San Nicola, built to house the relics, was begun in 1089. Since then, Bari has been an important pilgrimage site for both Roman Catholics and the Orthodox churches of the East.
